By definition, Islam is an Abrahamic monotheistic religion that originated in Mecca and that was revealed to prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) between 610 and 632 of the Common Era. The term Islam comes from the three letter Arabic root S, L, and M, used to generate words with interrelated meanings such as “submission”, “peace”, “surrender”, “commitment” among others. Beyond a strong belief in specific teachings and performance of important acts of worship, Islam is practiced as a complete and natural way of living, designed to bring God into the center of one’s consciousness, into the center of one’s life. Thus, through complete submission to God and acceptance of his guidance, Islam means submission to the will of God by which a person attains true peace with themselves and with God’s creations.
Islam is a religion centered on the Quran and the teachings of the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The main message Islam conveys is that God is one and incomparable (he, alone, is the one worthy of worship) and that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is his final messenger. Whoever believes this is called a Muslim. Muslims believe that Islam is the global and finished version of primordial messages revealed to earlier prophets such as Abraham, Jesus, Moses, among others, and that the Quran is the verbatim word of God, the unaltered final revelation. Alongside prior revelations and the Coran, a Muslim must also believe in God`s angels, his messengers, the last day, or day of judgment, and finally the decree of God.

Islam teaches that everything in creation (animals, plants, rivers, and mountains, etc.) is “Muslim”, (Muslim = one who willfully submits -to God-) testifying to the majesty of the creator and submitting to his divine laws.
As human beings, we are also considered fundamentally Muslims (submitters to God), in our original spiritual orientation. However, being unique creations provided with abilities of reason, judgment, and choice, we may remain on a righteous or God conscious path towards divine reward or may veer away as a consequence of our life decisions.
Islam`s core message is to love and worship God, but also to serve and treat God’s creations with love, kindness, and compassion. The religion of Islam teaches us to seek God’s pleasure through faith, prayers, patience, serving others,
charity, etc. with complete sincerity. God has given us, human beings, a choice between good and evil, right and wrong, and has told us that this life is a test where the righteous will be rewarded in paradise (Jannah) and the unrighteous will be punished in hell (Jahannam).
Islam, which is the world’s fastest growing religion with adherents numbered to approximately 2 billion people globally, is open to all. Anyone can become a Muslim regardless of their race, nationality, socioeconomic status, or gender. However, being a Muslim means to adopt a lifestyle in accord with Islamic principles and values.
